DEPARTMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Handgun Permits and Registration

Permits to purchase a handgun can be done for Hampton Township residents at the front counter of the Hampton Township Police Department. The front counter is normally open Mon, through Fri. (except holidays) from 8:00am until 4:00pm for purchase permits. Adults requesting a permit to purchase a firearm are required to have a photo I.D. with their current address, pass a criminal background check and take a basic firearm safety test. A pamphlet on Basic Pistol Safety is available upon request at the Police Station. Once requirements are met, a purchase permit, valid for 10 days, will be issued. If the permit is not used, it should be destroyed. Once a firearm has been purchased, the owner has 10 days to mail or deliver to their local police department two copies of the Licenses to purchase or Pistol Sales Records. Pistol Safety Inspections are no longer required.

An individual with a valid CCW license no longer needs a purchase permit when buying a handgun. However, they must still bring two copies of the Pistol Sales Record to the Hampton Police Station within 10 days of purchase

Further, pistol buyers are required to have in their possession their copy of the License to Purchase or Pistol Sales Record for 30 days after they acquire a pistol.

Requests for Police Assistance

* If you have an emergency call 911 to have the closest available unit sent.

* Calls for police assistance that are not considered an emergency should also go to 911. Central Dispatch will send the next available unit.

* If you have a question for a police officer or for records personnel call 989-892-0571. After normal office hours you will receive a message directing you to leave a message. You may leave a message for records personnel. In that case someone will respond to the message on the next business day. If you leave a message for a particular officer they will not respond to the call until they report for their next duty day.

There are normally one to three Hampton Officers on patrol within Hampton Township at any time. In addition to Hampton Police officers patrolling township streets the Bay County Sheriff's Deputies and Michigan State Police occasionally patrol and respond to calls for police assistance within the Township.

If you call for Police assistance and are not able to wait for a Hampton officer, you may request that a Sheriff's Deputy or a State Police officer be sent to respond to requests for police assistance.

GUN SAFETY LOCKS

The Police Department is participating in a state sponsored "Gun Safety Lock" program and is offering the program to Hampton residents at no charge.  Any resident who owns a semi-automatic pistol or shotgun should stop into the Department and pick up a gun lock to secure their firearm from being accidentally discharged or from an unauthorized use.  The Chief of Police is encouraging all residents who keep such firearms in their homes, particularly those who have younger children in the household, to take advantage of this program.

These gun safety locks will be distributed at no cost to any resident requesting them.

"Keep our children safe" by properly storing and securing firearms.
